Requisitos para alquilar un carro en Medellín siendo extranjero

Requirements for renting a car in Medellín as a foreigner

Renting a car in Colombia as a foreigner is perfectly normal, and if done correctly, it takes no more than 20 minutes for delivery. What seems complicated online is actually quite simple in practice. This guide compiles all the real requirements for renting a vehicle in Medellín if you are not Colombian, with no fine print and no empty promises.

Basic documents you need

  1. Valid passport: This is your primary identification document. Some countries (United States, Canada, Spain, Mexico) also accept an alien identification card if you already have one.
  2. Driver's license from your country: It must be valid and in your name. If it's in a non-Latin alphabet (Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Japanese), you also need an international driving permit.
  3. International Driving Permit (IDP): Recommended for all foreigners, mandatory if your license is not in Spanish or English. It must be processed in your home country before your trip.
  4. International credit card in the driver's name (optional): It's one of the ways to cover the security deposit. We also accept the guarantee in cash or by bank transfer.
  5. Migration stamp in your passport: To confirm that you entered the country legally.

About the license: what really matters

This is the number one question from foreigners, and the short answer is:

  • If your license is in Spanish or English, your valid national license is sufficient.
  • If it's in another language, you need an International Driving Permit to accompany the original.
  • The license must be valid. An expired license is not accepted, without exception.
  • It must be the original physical license, not a photo or screenshot.

Minimum age and experience

In Medellín, most reputable agencies require:

  • Minimum age: 21 years for economy cars, 25 years for premium cars.
  • Minimum driving experience: At least 2 years with an active license.
  • Some top-of-the-range vehicles may raise the minimum age to 28-30 years.

The deposit or guarantee

The guarantee is money we request to cover minor damage during your rental period. It can be left in cash, by credit card payment, or by bank transfer. The amount depends on the vehicle category:

  • Mid-range: COP 2,500,000.
  • High-end: COP 3,000,000.

💳 Deposit refundable within 8 business days after verification of traffic camera fines. During this time we check for possible photo fines or speeding reports. If no issues arise, the full amount is refunded within the business days indicated.

Refund methods:

  • Bank transfer (Bancolombia/Davivienda).
  • Transfers to U.S. accounts (subject to prior validation).
  • Cash.
  • Western Union.
  • Littio or Dollar app.

(Refunds are not made to cards).

Insurance and responsibility

A reputable agency will provide you with the vehicle with:

  • Valid SOAT (mandatory in Colombia).
  • Comprehensive insurance with a clear deductible.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance.
  • Clear geographical coverage (some countries have similar restrictions; in Colombia, it depends on each agency).

Always ask what the deductible is. At Exotic Rent a Car Medellín, we provide this information in writing before any reservation, in English or Spanish as needed.

How to book from abroad

The standard process we recommend:

  1. Browse the catalog and choose the vehicle and dates.
  2. Request a quote via WhatsApp or email (we respond in Spanish and English).
  3. Send a copy of your passport and driver's license.
  4. Confirm with an advance payment (bank transfer or online payment).
  5. On the day of arrival, pick up the car at the airport, hotel, or our office and leave the guarantee (cash, credit card, or bank transfer).

If you arrive by plane, we explain how to pick up your car at José María Córdova Airport upon landing.

What NOT to do

  • Do not rent from an agency that does not show you the deductible and coverage in writing.
  • Do not drive with an expired license, even if the difference is only a few days.
  • Do not let someone else drive the car if they are not registered as an additional driver.
  • Do not sign anything in another language without having the key points translated.
  • Do not use someone else's license (this will end badly in any traffic control).

Conclusion

For a foreigner, renting a car in Medellín is straightforward: passport, valid license (with an IDP if your language is not Spanish or English), the guarantee (cash, credit card, or bank transfer), and booking a couple of days in advance. With these elements sorted, we will coordinate the rest of the process with you from the first message.
