The security deposit is not a payment. It's money held during the rental period to cover minor damage to the vehicle, and it comes back in full if the car is returned in the condition it was handed over in.
It is separate from the rental price. If your rental costs X, you pay X and leave the deposit on top. At the end, the deposit returns; the rental doesn't.
It covers things like scratches, a knocked mirror, a damaged tyre or cleaning after a return in poor condition. It does not cover major incidents — that's what the vehicle's insurance policy is for.

The three ways to leave the deposit
This is where most international agencies put up a wall, and where there is real flexibility here:
- Cash. Handed over when you receive the vehicle and returned in cash or by whichever method you agree.
- Bank transfer. To a Bancolombia or Davivienda account before delivery.

The 8 business days and the speed cameras
The refund window isn't arbitrary. In Colombia, camera-detected infractions and speeding reports take several days to appear against the vehicle's plate. Because those fines arrive in the owner's name, the agency has to wait for the system to reflect them before releasing the deposit.
Hence the 8 business days from the end of the rental. If nothing comes up in that period, the full amount is refunded. If a ticket or damage appears, that value is deducted and the remainder returned, with supporting documentation.
Practical tip: if you're leaving the country before the window closes, agree from day one on how you want to receive the money. It's the most common oversight and the easiest to avoid.
