What are the requirements to rent a car in Medellín?

You only need your valid ID card or passport, a valid driver's license (Colombian or foreign) and to be at least 21 years old. We ask for a security deposit that is refundable 8 business days after the rental ends, to check for traffic camera fines or detections.

Can foreigners rent a car in Medellín?

Yes. You only need a valid passport and the original driver's license from your country, which is valid as long as you have been in Colombia for less than six months: the latest entry stamp in your passport is proof enough. The minimum age is 21 (25 for premium cars). A credit card is not required either: the security deposit can be left in cash or by bank transfer.

Do I need an international license in Colombia?

In most cases, no. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is only mandatory if your license is not written in the Latin alphabet; licenses from the United States, Canada or Europe work as they are. It must be the original physical document and still valid, not a copy or a photo.

Is it safe to drive in Medellín?

Yes. Driving in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley is safe if you take the usual precautions of any large city. Main roads are well signposted and in good condition. When we hand over the car we explain pico y placa (a rotating weekday restriction based on your plate number), the two routes to José María Córdova airport —Túnel de Oriente or Vía Las Palmas— and our tips for parking and night driving on highways.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Medellín?

What is the minimum rental period?

The minimum rental period is 48 hours (2 days). We offer special rates for weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly rentals, as well as discounts for early bookings or renewals.

Rent a Car in Medellín

Renting a car in Medellín is the fastest way to see Antioquia on your own schedule: Guatapé, Santa Fe de Antioquia, Jardín or the coffee farms around the city. Exotic Rent a Car is a local company with a 21-car fleet, free delivery anywhere in the Aburrá Valley, English-speaking support on WhatsApp and no mandatory credit card. Minimum rental is 48 hours, with daily, weekly and monthly rates.

  • Mandatory SOAT insurance plus a full-coverage policy; we walk you through coverage and deductibles before you sign.
  • Free delivery and pick-up at your hotel, apartment or office anywhere in the Aburrá Valley, and at Olaya Herrera airport (EOH).
  • Delivery at José María Córdova international airport (MDE, Rionegro) has a fee per trip: 130,000 COP daytime, 160,000 COP at night, or 250,000 COP round trip.
  • Unlimited mileage inside the Aburrá Valley; for trips to other departments we agree on the plan in advance.
  • Automatic cars with preventive maintenance up to date, and WhatsApp support during the whole rental.

Requirements for foreigners

You need your passport, an original, valid driver’s license and to be at least 21 (25 for premium cars; some top models require 28 to 30). A foreign license is valid as long as you have been in Colombia for less than six months — the latest entry stamp in your passport is proof enough. An International Driving Permit is only required when your license is not written in the Latin alphabet.

The security deposit can be left in cash, by bank transfer or with a credit card —the card is optional, never mandatory— and ranges from 2,000,000 COP for mid-range cars to 2,500,000 COP for high-end models. It is refunded within 8 business days after the rental ends, once traffic-camera reports are cleared; refunds are not issued back to cards. Driving in Medellín and our fleet

Driving here is straightforward once you know two things: pico y placa (a rotating weekday restriction based on your plate number) and the two roads to the airport — Túnel de Oriente, with about 26,000 COP in tolls, or Vía Las Palmas, with about 13,600 COP. For families and mountain roads, the 4x4 SUVs and 7-seater SUVs are the safe choice.
