Buying a hybrid car in Medellín? Test it first with a rental

¿Vas a comprar un carro híbrido en Medellín? Pruébalo primero con un alquiler

Quick answer

  • Renting a hybrid for 2 to 4 days lets you test real fuel use, hills, parking and highway driving before you buy.
  • In Medellín you can try the Mazda CX-30 Hybrid (from 380,000 COP per day) or the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Hybrid (from 700,000 COP per day).
  • Hybrids have been exempt from Pico y Placa in the Aburrá Valley; check the current rule before buying.

If you are thinking about buying a hybrid car in Medellín, the best way to decide is to rent one for a few days and use it in your real routine. A dealership test drive lasts a few minutes on a route chosen by the salesperson; a rental lets you measure fuel use on your own trips, climb the hills in your neighborhood, fit it into your parking space and take it on the highway. In this guide we suggest a three-day test plan and explain what to check before you sign.

What a 20-minute test drive does not show you

A short drive is enough to get a feel for the car, but it leaves out the questions that matter most:

  • Real fuel use on your trips. A hybrid's efficiency changes a lot between rush-hour traffic, a long climb and an open highway.
  • How it handles hills. Medellín has demanding climbs, such as the road up to Las Palmas or the streets of El Poblado and Envigado.
  • Everyday life with the car. Whether it fits your parking space, whether the trunk works for groceries or a stroller and whether the driving position is still comfortable after an hour.
  • How it feels on the highway. Noise, stability and comfort on a trip of several hours.

A three-day test plan

The minimum rental is 48 hours, so two or three days give you enough time to test the car in the situations that matter.

Day 1: your routine in the city

Do your usual trips: home, work, school, supermarket. Drive it at rush hour, which is where a hybrid usually shows its biggest advantage, because it uses the electric motor at low speed and recovers energy when braking. Write down the kilometers you drive.

Day 2: hills and parking

Drive up to Santa Elena via Las Palmas or take the steep streets in your area. Pay attention to the engine's response, the noise under acceleration and how easy it is to maneuver in tight parking lots.

Day 3: highway

Take a day trip. Guatapé is ideal because it combines highway, curves and town driving; here is the route from Medellín to Guatapé. If you prefer warm weather, try the route to Santa Fe de Antioquia, which goes through the western tunnel.

How to measure fuel use during the rental

The most reliable method is tank to tank:

  1. When you receive the car, write down the mileage and the fuel level.
  2. Fill the tank at a gas station and reset the trip counter.
  3. Drive normally during the test.
  4. Fill the tank again and divide the kilometers driven by the gallons you added.

The result is your real efficiency in kilometers per gallon. Compare it with your current car and with the figure the dealership gave you: that difference is what you will see in your wallet every month.

Pico y Placa: the advantage that matters most in Medellín

In the Aburrá Valley, hybrid and electric vehicles have been exempt from the Pico y Placa driving restriction, which means you can use the car every day of the week. The rule is reviewed every six months, so before buying, confirm the current conditions with the Mobility Department. If you rent with us, we confirm the vehicle's status when you book. To understand how the restriction works, read our guide to Pico y Placa in Medellín with a rental car.

Not all hybrids are the same

Before you test one, it helps to know what type of hybrid you are evaluating:

  • Mild hybrid: a small electric system assists the gasoline engine, mainly when pulling away. It cannot run on electricity alone.
  • Full hybrid: it can cover short distances in electric mode and recharges its battery through braking and the engine.
  • Plug-in hybrid: it has a larger battery that charges from an outlet and allows longer distances in electric mode.

Ask the dealership what type the model you like is, and use that as a reference when you compare the fuel use from your test. If you are still deciding between a hybrid and an electric car, our article on renting a hybrid or electric car in Medellín may help.

Hybrids you can test with us

Our fleet includes hybrid SUVs in different segments, such as the Mazda CX-30 Hybrid, a compact 5-passenger SUV, and the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Hybrid, a premium SUV. As a reference, as of September 2026 the CX-30 Hybrid starts at 380,000 COP per day and the GLC 300 Hybrid at 700,000 COP per day. The fleet changes over time, so check the hybrid car collection to see what is available and the current rate for each car.

Even if the model you want to buy is from another brand, the test is still useful: you will find out whether hybrid driving suits you, how much fuel you save on your routes and how much difference it makes not to have Pico y Placa.

Is it worth paying for a rental before buying?

Think of it this way: a few days of rental are a very small fraction of the price of a new car, and they help you avoid a purchase that does not fit your routine. Plus, during those days you have a premium car for everyday use or a weekend trip.
