Let's start with the awkward question: are there Ferraris or Lamborghinis in Medellín?

The four roads worth the drive
1. Las Palmas
Medellín's iconic road. It climbs from El Poblado towards the airport along the eastern hillside, with wide curves, good tarmac and viewpoints over the city. The toll is around 18,000 COP.
The best time is early morning on a weekday: less traffic, soft light and the city still clear of haze. At night it's a completely different proposition — dense fog and short visibility — so that isn't the moment to enjoy it.
2. Túnel de Oriente
The modern route to Rionegro: a tunnel of more than 8 km that cuts the airport journey to less than half. The toll is around 26,000 COP. It isn't a “driver's road” — it's straight and controlled — but it's the fastest way to reach the Oriente and then drive out there.
3. Llanogrande and eastern Antioquia
Past Rionegro a network of secondary roads opens up between fincas, with good tarmac, light traffic and open landscape. It's probably the best area in the region for unhurried driving: El Retiro, La Ceja, Carmen de Viboral, Marinilla.
4. The road west
The exit towards Santa Fe de Antioquia via the Túnel de Occidente combines a long tunnel, continuous descent and a change of climate: you leave Medellín at 20 °C and arrive at 32 °C. The downhill curves demand brakes in good condition and a cool head; it's a stretch to enjoy with judgement, not to rush.
What to expect from the weather and the terrain
- It rains often. April–May and September–November are the peaks. Wet tarmac on a mountain curve changes everything: slow down.
- Fog at altitude. Las Palmas and Santa Elena start and end the day with fog much of the year.
- Speed bumps and potholes. A low coupé gets through, but pay attention. Another reason a supercar would be a problem here.
- Trucks on the climbs. Overtaking demands patience and visibility. Never on a blind curve.
- Altitude. Naturally aspirated engines lose some power above 2,000 metres; turbos notice it less.
