Quick answer
- A 4x4 only makes a difference on dirt tracks, rural roads, steep farm driveways or in the rainy season; Guatapé and Santa Fe de Antioquia are reached by paved roads.
- Destinations where it is worth it: the Melcocho River canyon, the countryside around Jardín, Urrao, farms in eastern Antioquia and the swimming holes of San Rafael and San Carlos.
- In Medellín you can rent a Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Prado or Chevrolet Tahoe from 500,000 COP per day.

Most classic day trips from Medellín, such as Guatapé or Santa Fe de Antioquia, are on paved roads and do not require 4x4 traction. A 4x4 makes the difference when your plan includes dirt tracks, rural roads, farms on steep hills or the rainy season. In this guide we tell you which destinations near Medellín are worth visiting in a 4x4, when a regular SUV is enough and how to drive safely on unpaved roads.
When do you need a 4x4 and when is an SUV enough?
| Your plan | Recommended vehicle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| City, tourist towns and highways | SUV or sedan | The roads are paved and in good condition |
| Farm with an unpaved access road | 4x4 SUV | Better traction on dirt, gravel and slopes |
| Trips during the rainy season | 4x4 SUV | Dirt tracks turn to mud and lose grip |
| Group of 6 or 7 with luggage | Three-row 4x4 or 7-seater SUV | Room for passengers and bags |
If your plan is only city and main roads, an SUV is enough and is usually cheaper.
Destinations near Medellín for a 4x4
Rural road conditions change with the weather, so check the state of the track before you set out.
Melcocho River canyon (Cocorná)
Crystal-clear water, natural pools and a forest-lined canyon in eastern Antioquia. You get there via the Medellín–Bogotá highway to Cocorná, and the last stretch to the canyon's rural area is unpaved. In the rain, that stretch is where 4x4 traction is most welcome.
Jardín and the Cueva del Esplendor
Jardín is one of the most beautiful towns in Antioquia and is reached by a paved road. A 4x4 is useful if you want to explore the surrounding countryside: access to places like the Cueva del Esplendor combines a dirt track and a hike. The most practical option is to drive your SUV to the trailhead and continue with a local guide.
Urrao and the Páramo del Sol
Urrao is the gateway to the Páramo del Sol, one of the most impressive mountain destinations in the department. It is a long drive, so plan for at least two or three days. The rural roads to the trail access points are unpaved and call for an SUV with good ground clearance and traction.
Farms in eastern Antioquia
El Retiro, La Ceja, Guarne and Rionegro are full of farms and country houses with steep, unpaved or cobbled driveways. If you have rented a farm for the weekend, ask what the access is like: if there is a steep hill or dirt, a 4x4 keeps you from getting stuck in the middle of a downpour.
Swimming holes in San Rafael and San Carlos
Eastern Antioquia also has popular rivers and natural pools. The towns are reached by road, but several of the quietest swimming spots are in rural areas with unpaved stretches. There, the height of an SUV helps with potholes and rocks.
Tips for driving on unpaved roads
- Check the weather and the season. In Antioquia, rain tends to concentrate around April–May and October–November. A dry track and a wet one are two different roads.
- Leave early. Driving rural roads in daylight is safer and gives you margin if something takes longer.
- Slow down before potholes, rocks and curves. On dirt, braking in the middle of a curve makes you lose grip.
- Do not cross swollen streams. If you cannot see the bottom or the water is running fast, wait or find another route.
- Ask in town. Locals know better than any map what the road is like that day.
- Carry cash. Many tolls and rural shops do not take cards. Check the rates in our guide to tolls in Medellín and Antioquia.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience driving a 4x4?
For moderate tracks, driving calmly and following the tips in this guide is enough. If you have never driven on unpaved roads, start with short routes in good weather.
Does Pico y Placa apply to 4x4 SUVs?
Yes. In Medellín the restriction depends on the last digit of the license plate, regardless of the type of vehicle. Plan your departure with our guide to Pico y Placa with a rental car.
What is the minimum rental period?
The minimum rental is 48 hours. For distant destinations such as Urrao, we recommend booking at least three days.
Can you deliver the SUV at the airport?
Delivery is free in the main areas of the Aburrá Valley and at Olaya Herrera Airport. At José María Córdova Airport, delivery costs 130,000 COP per trip during the day, 160,000 COP at night or 250,000 COP round trip; see how delivery at Rionegro airport works.
